Back To School Speech Therapy Ideas:

Hey there, SLP! If you're working in a school setting, you know that managing a speech therapy caseload and organizing speech therapy activities can be quite a juggling act. But fear not! In this blog post, you’ll get practical back-to-school speech therapy ideas and tips to help you streamline your caseload organization and management. Use these back-to-school speech therapy tips and tricks to kick off your year! Let's dive right in!

Organize and Plan:

  • Begin by creating a master list of your caseload, IEP due dates, and paperwork that needs to be completed during the year.

  • I recommend a spreadsheet that also includes a student’s level of service for how much therapy they receive, their teacher, and their classroom. Think of this as the main hub of your operation-everything someone would need to know about your caseload housed all in one place.

  • Organizing with a spreadsheet allows you to sort your caseload by due date, grade, teacher, etc.

Good news for you! You can grab this exact system for free right here!

Collaborate and Communicate:

  • At the start of the year, it is important to share all IEPs with your students’ teachers. Be sure to email IEPs with a read-receipt so you have documentation that the IEP has been shared!

  • Consider the ways in which you will be able to efficiently and effectively communicate with parents as you need to gather information and input for evaluations and IEPs.

Use templates and forms!

They are your best friend when it comes to report writing! Spreadsheets help compile teacher and parent information without the need to type it all yourself.

Check out these Parent Input forms and templates!

Schedule:

  • One of the best ways to create your schedule is to use a survey form like Google Forms or Microsoft Forms.

  • Set the form to require teachers to check off 3-4 different time slots that a student would be available for therapy.

    • Using a digital form like this will graph the results of the most highly requested time slots and the least requested time slots so that you can see them easily and quickly.

    • Schedule the least requested time slots first! By doing so, you are likely scheduling some of the students that also requested the highly preferred times.

Speech Therapy Activities:

  • Maximize your speech therapy activities by using no-prep speech therapy lessons that are great for mixed groups. You can individualize and differentiate your activities to meet the specific needs of your students.

    • Book companions, no-prep speech therapy worksheets, and boom cards are great ways to have hands-on speech therapy activities!

  • Choose versatile speech therapy materials that can be adapted to suit various IEP goals while saving you precious time.

  • Keep it Engaging! Incorporate interactive and motivating activities into your therapy sessions. Utilize games, apps, and hands-on materials to capture your students' attention and maintain their interest. Remember, engaged students are more likely to make progress and enjoy the therapy process.

    • Seasonal activities are a great way to keep kids engaged!

By implementing these back-to-school speech therapy ideas, you can organize your therapy caseload, optimize therapy activities, and streamline your communication with the IEP team. Remember to be flexible, adjust as needed, and always keep the needs of your students at the forefront. You've got this!
